VOLUNTEER ROLES AVAILABLE AT THE MUSEUM

Fort guide

Leading guided tours around the adjacent Roman fort. This role would be suitable for someone who is good with people or with some knowledge of the subject. Tours are usually scheduled for Sunday afternoons April - October with additional tours on Thursday afternoons during the school holidays. Training will be provided.

Lecture/conference attendant

Helping set up for lectures, welcome attendees, make refreshments and tidy away chairs at the end of a lecture.

Show stand attendant

This person will be taking the Museum on the road to history fairs, agricultural shows and more. All you need is enthusiasm and a love of talking to people.

Learning volunteer - schools and family learning

The Museum provides inspiring learning for all ages and all abilities. Our learning team require enthusiasm, a love of history and an ability to inspire that enthusiasm in others. The learning volunteers also provide the museum's excellent schools learning programme led by Learning Co-ordinator Irene Louden.

Housekeeping

Support the staff in keeping the Museum and its grounds clean and tidy. This is one of the most important roles and helps to make a good impression on our visitors. This role can be scheduled around a volunteer's other commitments. Ability to 'muck in' is essential.

Grounds maintenance

This role includes keeping the outside spaces of the museum clean and tidy. This includes regular litter-picking, weed-killing, raking gravel and gardening. 

Collection care / documentation

Undertake routine conservation cleaning of the displayed and stored collection. The role is also an opportunity to carry out collection management duties including documentation. This is primarily a winter role.

Special events

Do you fancy joining us for special events such as the Roman Festival, lectures or the Literary Festival? All you need (again) is enthusiasm, good people skills and an ability to turn your hand to anything.

Gallery enabler

This volunteer will be good a providing a warm welcome to all museum visitors and ensure they have everything they need for an enjoyable and inspiring visit. Again, enthusiasm and a friendly face is required.
