Since the sixteenth century the inscribed and sculptured stones found in and around the Roman fort at Maryport have been lovingly collected by successive generations of the Senhouse family, and kept in the family home at Netherhall until their transfer to the Senhouse Roman Museum in 1990.
This book, a collection of essays in memory of the late Professor Mike Jarrett, explores some of the questions prompted by the Roman discoveries at Maryport.
Published here for the first time are:
• A full discussion of the cache of 17 altars found in 1870 buried in pits outside the fort, a discovery unique in Roman Britain.
• A full description of the earth-works of the Roman fort. The book discusses as well such topics as the origins of Roman Maryport, its relationship with Hadrian’s Wall and the coastal defences, the units stationed at the fort and their commanders, and the civilian population of the attendant village. The book closes with two essays which throw fresh light on the history of the Senhouse family.
