Dramatically sited on cliffs overlooking the Solway Firth, this award winning museum is next to a Roman fort probably founded in the first century AD and rebuilt during the reign of the emperor Hadrian.

Most of the objects in the Museum derive from the fort at Maryport and the Roman civil settlement attached to it. The museum displays the largest group of Roman military altar stones and inscriptions from any site in Britain and unique examples of Romano-British religious sculpture.

The collection, which was begun by the Senhouse family in the 1570s, is the oldest in the country, and is of international importance.

The Senhouse Roman Museum is a Registered Charitable Incorporated Organisation no 1175131

Reimagining Roman Maryport

The Senhouse Roman Museum is going on the road thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players the project focuses on exploring the Roman heritage of Maryport and West Cumbria as represented in the collections that the museum cares for and displays. The project's Roman Roadshow will take the museum out into Maryport and the surrounding communities. The Roadshow will host creative and playful ways for everyone to explore the Romans and what their Roman heritage can mean for them today and tomorrow.

The project will also explore ways that the people of Maryport and the surrounding area can contribute towards the future direction of the museum.

See the Reimagining Roman Maryport (RRM) page for further details.
